Auditory training program in subjects with tinnitus Programa

چکیده
Tinnitus may be defined as the conscious perception of sound or noise, without the presence of external acoustic stimulation. Given the damage caused by tinnitus and the lack of effective treatment, alternatives are necessary to rehabilitate subjects with tinnitus. There is an assumption that auditory training (AT) could lead to a plastic reorganization of this system, thus promoting an improvement of the symptom. Objective: To verify the effect of an AT program in subjects with tinnitus in the perception of this symptom. Methods: Twelve subjects with tinnitus were included in the study and divided into two groups: Study Group (SG) and Control Group (CG). All of them underwent audiometric and electrophysiological assessments; acuphenometry; Tinnitus Handicap Inventory and auditory processing assessment (GIN – Gaps in Noise, Frequency Pattern Test and Speech-in-Noise). Afterward, trainings began and the SG was submitted to the formal AT, and the CG to the visual training. Results: In the characterization of the groups, no statistically significant difference was found for the variables such as age, pitch, and loudness of tinnitus, or for hearing thresholds in conventional audiometry and high frequencies. Comparisons were performed between the groups, before and after the trainings, regarding electrophysiological, behavioral, and Tinnitus Handicap Inventory tests, and no statistically significant differences were found between them for any of the evaluations. Conclusion: Findings showed no statistically significant differences between groups in the comparison between the moments preand post-trainings (auditory or visual), nor for the electrophysiological findings or behavioral assessment of the auditory processing and for the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory, although some specific differences in the individual analysis have occurred.

Neural plasticity expressed in central auditory structures with and without tinnitus
Sensory training therapies for tinnitus are based on the assumption that, notwithstanding neural changes related to tinnitus, auditory training can alter the response properties of neurons in auditory pathways. To assess this assumption, we investigated whether brain changes induced by sensory training in tinnitus sufferers and measured by electroencephalography (EEG) are similar to those induc...

متن کاملDESIGN AND STRUCTURE OF A NEW DEVICE FOR AUDITORY ELECTRICAL STIMULATION FOR SUPPRESSION OF TINNITUS
Auditory Electrical Stimulation for Tinnitus Suppression Tinnitus is the conscious experience of sound which arises in the head of its owner, but without a voluntary origin obvious to that person. About 10-15% of all adults report prolonged spontaneous tinnitus (PST). There are a lot of methods for suppressing this complaint. One of these methods is electrical stimulation. Electrical stimu...

Recent studies have indicated that the pathophysiological basis for tinnitus may be abnormal activity in the auditory areas of the brain rather than aberrant activity in the periphery. Tinnitus-related activity leads to changes in tonotopic representation in auditory cortex. However, such reorganization can be reversed through training-induced changes in the response pattern of cortical neurons...

Epidemiological data suggest that tinnitus is something more and something different from an auditory symptom. In fact, subjective tinnitus is reported to be present in 10-15% ( Axelson et. al 1995) persons in general population but it represents a medical problem, that interferes with general and emotional health state, only about 2%. Furthermore, factors associated with tinnitus such as heari...
